Technology Addiction and What you Can do About It. | Ben Halpert | TEDxSaintThomas technology addiction

by autisticchiaNGMAI

Society is guiding our children mindlessly towards technology at an alarming rate, without taking a step back to examine the potential impact this could have. For many, technology flooding starts very early in life, and is hard to escape as we become increasingly dependent on technology for even the simplest of tasks.

Ben Halpert is Vice President, Risk and Corporate Security for Ionic Security and Founder and President of Savvy Cyber Kids, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization he founded in 2007 to provide innovative cyber ethics resources to assist parents and teachers as children grow up online.

Ben is an award-winning author of several books for diverse audiences. He has written and continues to expand The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home series of books that include The Family Gets a Computer, The Defeat of the Cyber Bully, and Adventures Beyond the Screen. Ben has the most fun when he is invited to schools world-wide to educate students, teachers, and parents on how to be empowered with technology and to bring cyber ethics to all aspects of our digital lives.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at .

I struggle with technology. So much that I've almost lost my job. The "need to do it because I've been wanting to do it all day" mindset or the "I'm not on my phone all the time", or the classic "I see you on your devices all the time, why can't I be on mine?" All of these are examples of why I've been struggling to stay alive today. I get this mindset that I have to be satisfied with something that holds me back from living life. I want to change who I am, and not become something I don't.

all of this is leading to a generation of people with a new form of mental illness. An illness that is similar to addiction but more insidious than that. An illness brought about by messing with something so fundamental to human cognitions and socialization, but heretofore virtually unknown to science. Kind of like when you sever a motor nerve in a monkey to see what affect it might have, and to see if the monkey brain can compensate. Kind of like sleep deprivation, kind of like the trauma of war. It is in fact the deprecation of normalcy in child brain development.

I don't like the scare mongering tone, but it's also clear this is an important issue for parents.
I just wish the title was clear this was about parenting because I don't have kids and I'm being stressed out about things other people are doing that I have no control over.

So if you have an addiction you should just choose to quit. Not the best advice IMO

Good content but, he is only reading the presentation. I think he could get through the topic more specifically.

Take a shot everytime he says "right now" and you would be dead from alcohol poisoning.

Does anyone here have any advice for me? I am the child, and my mum either sleeps most of the day or is watching go or on her iPad. My sister sleeps until 4:00am playing games, and that leaves me with not much to do, so I go on my iPad. I want to go outside because my sister and I are a little overweight, but she hates the outside and walks, so I stay inside. I can’t go on a walk on my own because my mum is kinda over protective and doesn’t let me, and I can’t exactly go on my own without being noticed. If anyone has any advice that would be great, thanks 💕😔

I was thinking about similar recently and made something on here about societies addiction to screens, myself included. To see it just type in search bar above the following title….'Addicted to a screen'

Not all he said it’s sad. And not what’s sad it is completely. We can’t, we must not avoid the change. We can, we must, chose case by case.

I know it’s cryptic but it’s what it is. If you think different you wrong my man.

If I can't live in a world that promotes truth, reality, and even the survival of my soul, why even bother living? How can we fight the scourge of deception when the majority are so blind or unwilling to be human?
