Quit social media | Dr. Cal Newport | TEDxTysons technology to life replicating the waste

by autisticchiaNGMAI

‘Deep work’ will make you better at what you do. You will achieve more in less time. And feel the sense of true fulfillment that comes from the mastery of a skill.

Cal Newport is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Georgetown University. In addition to studying the theoretical foundations of our digital age, Newport also writes about the impact of these technologies on the world of work. His most recent book, Deep Work, argues that focus is the new I.Q. in the modern workplace and that the ability to concentrate without distraction is becoming increasingly valuable. He previously wrote So Good They Can’t Ignore You, a book which debunks the long-held belief that “follow your passion” is good advice, and three popular books of unconventional advice for students.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at .

The word social media is poorly defined. I've never used Facebook or Twitter or Instagram. I use YouTube and Discord only. Is email social media? Is texting social media?

Social media is not a problem .Your routine is ,your focus is ..Problem is inside treat it else social media place will be taken by something else . Problems and solutions are inside not outside..

As a 20 year old coming into 2022, I can without question of doubt say that my generation will be negatively impacted by this inability to focus due to social media. Why sit in lectures/classes when people can make thousands on Tiktok.
Our view of success is changing, not always in the best way…

Being social media free is great like okay you can use YouTube for educational purposes and Zoom for Professionals but other than that you don't need it want to keep in touch with family abroad there's video chat, telegram or signal. Need the news there's apps or websites for that. Social media is not needed.

The speaker seems to be just jealous of Mark Zuckerberg that's why he's against social media.

While I am pro "quit social media". I think it is useful to at least be honest with ourselves and realize not everyone requires deep work in the manner in which it is being described. Content creators & influencers are as well members of society who aren't building algorithms etc. but are making a living through social media. Quit social media is not for everyone.

Social media is the devils playground anyways. Remember that film How To Lose Friends and Alienate People? Just get a Social media account. Less is always better, you'll respect yourself later.

I quit all social media in october 2019, where i had a big online presence and following but had a borderline burn out. I was constantly stressed. I measured my succes and self worth through the eyes of others but felt i couldnt just throw away what ive built up. But i did. Removed everything. And no one even wonders what happend to me, or at least no one asked. I cant imagine people havent noticed but it appears so. Now 2+ years later i just got promoted to manager and am way more succesful than i was online. This is real life. I have also lost all anxiety and depression and have rewarding new hobbies to fill my time. Anyone reading this in a similar position: please get your life back! Those followers, comments and likes are not real and not worth sacrificing your mental health for.

I agree completely with the speaker, personally, I dedicated so much time to social media during my doctoral studies to social media, that almost i could not finish it. I regret it that now, i could do it better, more deep finding i guess.

I abandoned Instagram around september, my account was art-focused, over there I shared my ink drawings on a normal sketchbook because my drawing tablet stopped working. I had friends there (genuine ones I shared personal stuff with), but their drawings always were better recieved than mine, and theirs were made digitally while I drew on ink. Eventually, I compared myself to them, and by June I hit rock bottom due to that and other circumstances that led me to almost commit suicide twice that month. I'm happy I didn't do that, and I still tried to do my best in Instagram, but comparing myself with my friends' digital drawings became a natural reaction (plus, they didn't want to talk about my mental health problems when I had this June crisis), so I left, and now I am happy with my real life. This video is a top notch portrayal of my situation, and I'm glad to know it exists.
