Elon Musk interview with Financial Times – Highlights (Ep. 470) finance interview

by autisticchiaNGMAI

I discuss the following highlights from Elon Musk’s interview with Financial Times ( for their Person of the Year award.

1. “For a long time, the rest of the auto industry was basically calling Tesla and me fools and frauds. They were saying electric cars wouldn’t work, you can’t achieve the range and performance. And even if you did that, nobody would buy them.”

2. “I felt they [National Transportation Safety Board] pursued press headlines over real safety. That’s obviously [something] I do not respect, nor should be respected. It’s certainly possible for some assh*** to compile the handful of times that I’ve disagreed with regulations, write a story and make it sound as though I’m some, like, madman shooting from the hip. At no point am I suggesting that any regulatory agency be disbanded, or anything like that. I’m not some sort of mad-cap libertarian.”

3. Is Musk’s bad-boy Twitter persona part of some elaborate marketing plan… He laughs at the question. “I mean, are you not entertained? I’m not saying I don’t make foolish tweets, of course I do. There are times when I shoot myself in the foot. But you know, on balance, it’s entertaining and interesting, informative, whatever.”

4. “The thing that people who don’t work with me don’t understand is that I’m first and foremost an engineer. How have Tesla and SpaceX succeeded when other companies have far more resources and money than I do? The problem is they can’t hire me.” He also says a dedication to engineering excellence and a focus on important challenges has been critical to attracting top engineering talent.

5. Musk says he spends seven days and 80-90 hours a week bouncing between the most critical projects at Tesla and SpaceX. “It’s not like I arbitrarily try to micromanage. I am actually involved in triage: What is the most useful thing that I can do? And I am very good at technology and engineering. Everyone’s got their talents, that’s one of mine. I can’t sing or dance, but I can do that.”

6. He says Bezos has “reasonably good engineering aptitude but he does not seem to be willing to spend mental energy getting into the details of engineering. The devil’s in the details. In some ways, I’m trying to goad him into spending more time at Blue Origin so they make more progress. As a friend of mine says, he should spend more time at Blue Origin and less time in the hot tub.”

7. “I am confident we don’t need new physics [for Starship]. But it is just a staggeringly difficult technical problem. I sometimes wonder, is it actually within the ability of humans to do this? I know that it can be done, but it remains to be done.”

8. “I didn’t think we would have to solve a significant part of artificial intelligence to make FSD work”. But he adds that he is now “99.9 per cent — round it up to 100 per cent — confident full self driving will work, it’s just a question of when.

Great work Dave, I think Elon is an enigmatic, one-of-a-kind individual with different groundbreaking Innovation by him and his team while being cool and fun about. Awesome!

Andy Grove had the same philosophy during Intel's most successful/innovative era.

Hi Dave! For humanities sake, literally, can you offer this guy a more informed perspective on Elon and his companies? Thanks! Keep up the amazing work👍🏻🙏🏻…he has 442,000 subs. I agree with most of his perspective but he is 180* off on Eon.

Spring Hill Fitness 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Elon is the best. As far as dragging OEMs into electrification, all the stockholders who drove up Tesla's crazy valuation should get some credit too! They voted with their capital before Tesla sold very many cars.

Maybe the press is finally realizing they need to call a spade a spade.
Elon for Noble Peace Prize👍

Andries du Plessis 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Awesome summary. Thank you very much. Always hopeful that Africa too will one day soon benefit from Tesla and its products. We surely can do with renewable energy solutions. South Africa where I was born is one of the world's worst CO2 polluters or at least on the African continent.

ken 1 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Yeah. Thanks Dave for your calm unemotional assessments of things without all the blame and hyperbole we find on some othe Tesla channels.

Not thousands and thousands of humans to Mars but thousands and thousands of humanoids to Mars! Ok, Ok, in the long run thousands of humans to Mars.

Elon Musk is a national gem, yet Biden refuses to speak about him.🥲

terawatt 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

The DC marxists can take down Tesla. They do not actually want real "progress" as much as they want to line their pockets from the progress narrative. Musk… a real problem solver… is a major threat to DC corruption.

Jorrit van den Berg 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

You’re right about the interview, Dave. Video, more in-depth, nuance, etc. The Dave, Rob & Elon interview is long overdue! 😉

The Dragon Slayer 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Hey Dave you were just projecting you never planned on giving $50,000 to the afghans you just wanted to project to your audience that you were somebody special but in reality you’re not anyone special.

The Dragon Slayer 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

I never hear people call them I.C. cars. I hear “ice” and “ev,” but first time I hear I.C.

John Carpenter 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Standard autopilot is very impressive but their AI isn't even good enough for the automatic windshield wipers and automatic headlights to work properly. My pickup truck works much better than my Model 3. It's not a good sign for the potential of FSD.

Strangely Brown 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

I think his comment about triage and “clearing bottlenecks” is really insightful…. I expect he prioritises by looking at the bottle-neck list and saying to himself “which of these is the biggest problem, and which one can I focus on TODAY”… Great vid Dave.

Bob D 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Great summary Dave! I hope you write a book someday about Elon's contributions to transitioning mankind to sustainable energy!

mpvsystems 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Elon works and has structured his companies – and has maintained the culture – as if they were "small" companies. This is an incredibly important lesson for the typical "enterprise". In many small companies the owner(s) are typically the engineers. They have lightweight processes and a flat org structure. As a result they are nimble, agile and adaptive; they have no lifer bureaucrats! Corporations need to watch and learn how it to do it right in the future!

Diana Chan 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Thank you Dave

Peter Lou 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Nobel prize is next!

Barbara Lee 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

This is SO unfair to Mary Barrea!! I mean Joe Biden said SHE led the way. I mean SHE thought Nikola was a smart investment!! She overseas a company that has their basic EVs car in a massive recall. She must be really annoyed that Time overlooked her achievements in favor of the worlds favorite tweeter. Elon to the moon!! Go Tesla

Tlz 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Really like the style of your videos with the text and pen drawings

Jeffrey Lakatos 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Dave, you're videos give me so much enjoyment and I learn so much! Always look forward to a new one. Thank you for sharing your stream of consciousness.

William de Ora (de Silva) 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Another great video. Thanks Dave 👍🏼

Bram Moerman 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Good stuff, Dave. I think that what really separates Elon’s companies from the rest, is that Elon took to heart Dwight D Eisenhower’s leadership philosophy. . . “You cannot push a string”. Elon is extremely demanding, a bit like a boss I once had, who had “no life” except for his job. The man was the smartest person I’ve PERSONALLY met in my 77 years. . . and, like many of Elon’s employees, I did, in fact, ”have a life” . . . As for the string, that boss did pull me no new levels of achievements. . .

Abebe345 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

Great way you attack what's new and relevant.

Ting Lu 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

stock tanked again though

David T 21/12/2021 - 6:46 Chiều

History will show that this administration and the evil bureaucrats like Senator Karen hindered this generation’s Henry Ford for the benefit of China. America will never recover from losing its leadership in tech and EV manufacturing. Imaging what would have become of Ford today if they had the same level of contempt from the government back then…
