In business, technology is used to increase efficiency with the use of machinery and systems. It is used in all functions of the business. It has a huge impact on the operations process. Technology will give a business a competitive advantage in the market place but will also be expensive to implement. Example: Coca Cola –invested millions in payment technology for their vending machines.

The operations manager will has to decide: Will we be a leader in implementing new technology or to be a follower and let another business take the leading role. Example: Samsung was found guilty in 2012 of copying Apple’s design ideas.

Office Technology: Business technology includes: Computers, Mobile telephones, Paging services, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), Scanner, fax, photocopier, EFTPOS machines. Advantages of business technology: People can do more work in less time. People can work from home. Meetings can be conducted via webcam. Productivity has increased. Manufacturing Technologies: include Robotics, Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM). Robotics: Technology that is used in: Engineering, Assembly lines, Specialised areas of research. Example: Car Manufacturing. Advantages of robotics: Precision and accuracy, Robots don’t need breaks, sick leave or holidays, Robots don’t get bored with repetitive tasks. Computer Aided Design (CAD): Businesses can design products on a computer. Data (parameters) is put into the computer program. Three dimensional diagrams are created that can be viewed from multiple angles. Advantages of CAD: The amount of materials needed can be calculated. Time for task completed will be also calculated. It can list the sequence of tasks that needs to be completed in the shortest lead time. Cheaper and faster process than drafting designs on paper. Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM): From the CAD software, the business can now connect the computer to the machine and make the product using Robotics! Furniture Manufacturers now often make customised furniture for their customers. Customers submit the measurements, materials and shape. CAD is used to design the furniture. The design is then linked to the machine that instantly manufactures the product. .
